Type Locality and Naming

By the valley of Shurysay, south of the Gissar ridge, Tajikistan. M.N. Gramm, 1949 (177, p. 5).

Synonym: Shurysayskaya Suite, Шурысайская св.


Lithology and Thickness

Marine red-colored sandstones, siltstone (aleurolites), clays, gypsums. Thickness up to 338 m.

Contains mollusks - Cardium (Cerastoderma) cf. levinae Merkl., C. helmerseni Iljina, Corbula cf. helmerseni Mikh.; ostracods - Cetheridea miilleri (Münster), C. kamilla Ros.


Age 

M.N. Gramm (177) referred the marine red-colored deposits of the Tajik Depression to the Shurysay Horizon and dated it to the Oligocene. In the Surkhandarya depression, where the section of the horizon is incomplete, and only the deposits of its upper part are present, Y.R. Smolnikov et al. (1971) distinguished them at the rank of a formation, retained the name Shurysay for it, and based on mollusks justified its Early Miocene age, correlating it with the Kyzylchin Fm of Southwest Gissar.
